Light splits the morning and colours the grey
Never a smile on my face
Endless combustion controlling the flow
These guiding rhythms are starting to slow
Progress for life
Each burdened day brings you trouble and strife
Old life for me
Only a dream but it’s where I should be
I’ve been planning the day
Where I leave it all behind
I’ve been waiting for you
To change my mind change my mind
And the path that I follow
Helps me get through the despair
I’ve been waiting for you
I need repair need repair

That is not death which can eternal lie
And with strange eons even death may die
There’s nought but danger out in the black
So be jolly afraid because he’s coming back

‘Now, ladies and gentleman, a story about a very large vegetable. Thank you.’
Down the road there lives a man I’d like you all to know.
He grew a great big marrow for the local flower show.
And when the story got around they came from far and wide.
‘I say.’
When the people saw the marrow everybody cried.
CHORUS
Oooh, what a beauty.
Never seen one as big as that before!
‘Gracious!’
Oooh, what a beauty.
It must be two foot long or even more
‘I say!’
It’s such a lovely colour, all nice and round and fat.
‘Oooh.’
I never knew a marrow could grow as big as that!
Oooh, what a beauty,
Never seen one as big as that before.
‘I doubt it.’
He was leaning on the garden gate the other day
And beckoned to a lady who lived just across the way
He took her up the garden path and showed to her his prize
And when she saw the size of it the little lady sighed
CHORUS
Oooh, what a beauty.
She’d never seen one as big as that before.
Oooh, what a beauty.
It must be two foot long or even more.
‘She’s full of the joys of spring.’
It’s such a lovely colour all nice and round and fat.
I never thought a marrow could grow as big as that.
Oooh, what a beauty.
Never seen one as big as that before.
‘She means the marrow!’
And then the flower show was held and everybody went.
To see the great big marrow lying there inside the tent.
‘How did they get it in?’
Soon the judges came around to give the prizes out.
They only took one look at it and they began to shout.
CHORUS
Oooh, what a beauty.
We’ve never seen one as big as that before.
‘I say.’
Oooh what a beauty.
It must be two foot long or even more.
Oooh, It’s such a lovely colour all nice and round and fat.
I never thought a marrow could grow as big as that.
Oooh, what a beauty.
Never seen one as big as that before.
Never seen one as big as that before.

A tune that fell victim to previous inclement mixing conditions. This appeared on the A Year in the Country compilation album The Quietened Village, and unfortunately, we mixed it too quietly. Here it is in its rejigged and remastered version. More info at www.ayearinthecountry.co.uk

When we were putting together ideas for the aforementioned Book of the Lost project with Emily Jones, we thought we needed a closing theme to go with the opening titles. In the end we didn't need a closing theme, but this could well have been it - had we needed one!

You were admiring my clematis from across the thoroughfare.
It really is a lovely one, I don’t mind if you stare.
Why don’t you come on over, and have a cup of tea.
Come on in and look around, there’s so much more to see.
Come into my lady garden, won’t you come inside?
I’ve trimmed it to perfection, I’m bursting out with pride.
I’ve loved and lost a thousand times, I’ll wager so have you.
So come into my lady garden, there’s room enough for two.
It really smells quite lovely, it invades your every sense.
Be careful not to lose yourself, the foliage is dense.
I lost a pair of shears in there, with handles made of teak.
Now I’ve lost my poor dear pussy cat, now she’s been gone a week.
Come into my lady garden, won’t you come inside.
I’ve trimmed it to perfection, I’m bursting out with pride.
I’ve loved and lost a thousand times, I’ll wager so have you.
So come into my lady garden, there’s room enough for two.
I’ve loved and lost a thousand times, I’ll wager so have you.
So come into my lady garden, there’s room enough for two.
So come into my lade garden, there’s room enough for two.

Way way back in the mists of time there lived a simple girl
Whoever knew that some fine day she’d travel all the world
An Irish girl from Donegal she came from farming stock
Hard working lass and always gave as good as she got.
One day a stranger came to town as Connie he did seek
An evil glint was in his eye he was after more that sheep
He grabbed her by the wrist and he did pull her to the floor
A flash of blade and she drew blood the stranger was no more.
Her name was on the breath of every man and on their fingers
She was a legend of her time
And her name was Connie Lingus...

Sins of the children is the cross that he bares,
and the blood that he spills is for no one, no one.
Who needs a Shepard when the sheep become wolves,
and when they're hungry they look to the lamb.
They eat the flesh to satisfy their perversion,
sacrilegious symptoms, but they say its their right
Passion of a dying god, children rejoice in the fading power
Passion of a dying god, but who will save you in your final hour
attack the believers wage war on their faith,
you say your not sheep but you're just another breed.
Point your finger at all of the martyrs,
tells all again why your life is so hard.
Lonely are the righteous on the path to the kingdom,
backed up traffic on the highway to hell
Passion of a dying god, children rejoice in the fading power
Passion of a dying god, but who will save you in your final hour
Born of sin, and full of darkness, but i'm not alone
Born of sin, and full of darkness, but i'm not alone
Passion, Passion, Passion of a dying god
Passion, Passion, Passion of a dying god
Passion of a dying god, children rejoice in the fading power
Passion of a dying god, but who will save you in your final hour

Lost in the Rubble, the TRouble, The scrubble
I wandered through valleys and alleys of shelves
Time tossed and senseless, what’s something’s now nothing
The things that we loved, now catalogued and left
Roaming the musty gloom, row after row
In silence forgotten, discarded and rotten
Geegaws and ornaments, bits and stuff
A broken china turtle dove
Helmets, pelmets, cats and hats
Oil on board, the fifth earl on a hunt
The broad jump bronze from 1908
Sepia photos torn, crumpled and burnt
Chorus
Lost, tossed, hidden and found
Things Mundane in touch and sound
Caused by time to lose their tale
From dust to rust all fades to pale
Row upon row of unread books, no proof they were ever drafted
Sir Robert Murdoch Struan’s 8 volume bloody tome, 40 years with rod, line and gun
Bells, buckles, bones, phones, pheromones, a pigstick spear unshafted
Old wheels juju and haha, a child in a jar undone
A demand from a lawyer, for a bill from a tailor
A lost love logged on perfumed pink paper
Tiger skin, ming vase, stone tools flint and bone
All lost in memory, want, left alone
Game birds, deer head, water buffalo horn
Celtic cross, monkey’s paw, a shrunken head hair shorne
Greenglaze, samain, skeletal homo sapien
Brass spittoon, cartoon. A finger of cousin damian
Yellowing paper, a cavalry sabre
The deeds to a long gone french farmhouse
Cassette tapes, some brown drapes, a stuffed bear, a low pair
A poster of Bruce Lee, a decomposed mouse
An old china tea set with hand painted flowers
3 crystal bells and a t towel from rhyll
Chorus 2
In this Room of MUndane things
Where the walls are closing in
I could search to the edge, Year upon year
To find one honest tear
Roaming the musty gloom, shelf after shelf
In silence forgotten, discarded and rotten
What once was important and held so dear
The flotsam and jetsam of life, all lost and hidden here.
Lost in the rubble, the trouble, the scrubble
I wander through rooms, full of history’s songs
Goods and possessions, chattel and baggage
Lost in the dust of time nothing belongs
In this pile of Humdrum things
Our stories are lost in the gloom
A moment so precious, singular time
Hoarded and saved in this mundane room

In a barely lit workshop on Candle Lane
Worked a craftsman without constrain
The watches were built for the gentleman’s gain
Matthew works along by the window pane
The owner said to him when he retires
That Matthew would inherit all that he desires
That the shop would be his and his alone
The years have gone by and it’s taking too long
Then one night it happened he had an idea
The only way he knew of to make his career
He built a perfect watch with gears made of gold
And took it to the owner who said it can’t be sold
The owner scoffed at Matthew and shamed him on the spot
Extra is not a virtue or had he forgot
For gold is way too soft and it cannot keep time
That’s when Matthew first thought of the crime
His head started spinning
A time of bad dreams
He couldn’t stop thinking of foolish things
It’s been four months since that day and Matthew owns it now
The owner up and died nobody knows how
There could have been an inkling a twinkling in his eye
But Matthew is the only one who knows why

Hey!
I walk the streets, people that I meet,
I always tip my hat to the strangers that I seek
My face is bland, they cannot understand
I’ve no distinguished features, I am just another man
It makes my job so easy, these skills that I have got
I reach into their pocket and I’ll take the bleeding lot
The treasure that I find keeps me living for a time
Puts food upon me table now is that a bloody crime?
Shame about my kleptomania thank you dear old Queen Victoria
You’ve made this city so appetising don’t you stand there crying

RAISING THE SUN
I fought with a frost that was cruel to the bone
I danced on a lke that was harder than stone
Through darkness I mourned you on the longest of nights
But now with your raising my world becomes bright
Raise, raise, raise, raising the sun
Raise, raise, raise, raising the SUN.
DREAM OF LIGHT
A dance through the darkness will bring you back home
A sleep in the cold earth till warmth brings the dawn
Your golden rays flickering were a dream of my nights
And now with your waking, my world becomes light.
I'm up on a hill top with with space all around
My feet in the earth and my head in the clouds
I'm up on a hill top and I'm breathing in deep
The earth pushing up through the soles of my feet
One tiny step forward sets a beat in the drum
And I'm rolling down hill to the bright... sun
To the bright summer sun
I'm rolling down hill to the bright summer sun.
LET IT SHINE
Let it shine...
Let it shine...
Let it shine...
Let it shine...
Let it shine...
Shine, shine, shine, shine...
Shine.

Oh they say that Heaven will come to Earth
They say that there will be rebirth
But all I know for all its worth
I only love the Green Man
Only love the Green Man
Every spring I’ve ever known
The trees the grass the flowers have grown
And their beauty to me has shown
I only love the Green Man
Only love the Green Man
Every beat my heart will make
And every breath I’ll ever take
All I do is for his sake
I only love the Green Man
Only love the Green Man
Wind and death cold as stone
To dust will dry my flesh and bone
Where I will enrich his throne
I only love the Green Man
Only love the Green Man
He was there when time began
God shared with Him his earthly plan
He was in the stable when the angels sang
I only love the Green Man
Only love the Green Man
Life is red in tooth and claw
And all observe Mother Nature’s law
Yet he’ll be there for evermore
I only love the Green Man
Only love the Green Man
Tsunami waves and hurricanes
Landslides slips and acid rain
Through all calamities he still reigns
I only trust the Green Man
Oh they say that Heaven transcends all time
Is way beyond all reason and rhyme
With a God and I are of like mind
She’ll only trust the Green Man
She’ll only love the Green Man
So if we want to save the Earth
For generations of rebirth
We once again must learn his worth
And learn to trust the Green Man
Learn to love the Green Man

Why does all the darkness fade away, black as all the ashes in your grave
Well I have been through dark horizons, you don’t wanna be
You seek the night, it’s coming back for me
Why is all the darkness in your brain, when I read all your memories today.
I’m somewhere deep within the visions, you don’t wanna see
Where time unwinds to call you in your sleep
And the wanderer goes south,
Well he lived there long ago, now the stars begin to show
And the wanderer goes south,
There’s that demon in the sky, there’s that devil in disguise
I just want to know just who you are, trapped between the devil and the dark
Well I think it is time to go and I’m heading through the door
You can’t believe we’ve done this all before
Drowning in the light beneath the sun,
Drowning in the light beneath the sun,
Now silent angels sing to me, but I’ve heard this song before
It’s killing time to leave you wanting more
The Darkness, your hunger the nine billion names of god
The Darkness, your hunger the nine billion names of god
Your Darkness, the hunger the nine billion names of god
The Darkness, your hunger the nine billion names...

I am one and you are two
Together we divine
Falling through a spiral cage
Oblivion’s design
I don’t fear your desolation
You don’t know my name
Infinite your hesitation
Eternity thy name
Up above the acid world
Is speaking out in tongues
Whispers to the world below
A venom of the blood
Nuclear intoxication
Seeping through your veins
The worm of man your congregation
A poison for the pain
Lamplighter sing a song
Lamplighter hanging on
Allow your eyes to rest tonight
The light you breathe will always shine
In the womb the serpent grows
It slithers through the wall
the tangled roots around your heart
are rotten to the core
Lingering the lamps are burning
Embers fading low
In your sleep a spirit yearning
For lives you’ll never know
As the old one turns her ways
The silent master sings
He tears his mind, now shadowblind
He drops down to his knees
Is his house a lightless prison
In this world he made?
Clamber for his words of wisdom
A former life betrayed
Dream Flight,
Running through your mind tonight
Then your heart beating
Tears in your eyes tonight
Take me to your dream
Nightmares will end
Darkness deceives you
Your flame will die
Shadows, they consume you
Warden of light
Your time is short now
Keepers of night
Rising, amber fading
Lamplighter sing a song
Lamplighter hanging on
Allow your eyes to rest tonight
The light you breathe will always shine
Our souls are black
Yours soon will join us
Life’s work, your flame
Lamplight now extinguished
Abyss of night
The void draws around you
Death’s kiss, your life
Now short, embers failing
Lamplighter sing a song
Lamplighter hanging on
Allow your eyes to rest tonight
The light you breathe will always shine

We were always teased when we were young
Now that I am older I don’t care
We never grew attached to anything
Anything we had would only stink
Grew up by the sinkhole near the park
Our house on the corner very dark
CHORUS
And we threw all that we had into the hole
And we threw all that we had into the hole
Father came too late to catch us all
And we threw all that we had into the hole
Used to have four siblings now I’ve just three
The eldest and the youngest in the middle me
I’d thrown down all our toys and said goodbye
Jason chased them down as he cried
We pretend to hear him knocking on the floor
Mum won’t talk about him any more
CHORUS
Do you hear those strange melodies
Almost audibly through the trees
Like whistling in the dark of little boys
Swallowed by the earth chasing toys
Our neighbour’s kids visited us as well
We dared them to sleigh ride down the hill
CHORUS

Silent lightning, i saw it in a dream
Shapes disolve but childlike ghosts they do not
I wish that you were here while you were leaving soundless air inside your living room
Touched like an angel, her light is so bright that they all look away
I cant resist
Never went to sleep at night, artic sea was cold and bright
now houseflies in the mist
strangers never meet out here, you could walk straight for a year
The chill of the stars like lights of distant cars
Sulphurous clouds plume like faces
Frozen in a lake with seasons unawake its painted blue for you
Heart of mine froze inside of the place where winter died
I cant resist
Never went to sleep at night, artic sea was cold and bright
now houseflies in the mist
strangers never meet out here, you could walk straight for a year
Noone can exist
Flower in the night alone, Yearning where the sun had shone
The sun has eclipsed
The books are all so dull, seagulls leaving skulls, wind-blown wishing wells
Forgotten who we are, bathing suits and scars, polyester cars
Something natural, dreamt of grocery stores and motorbikes and more
I forgot the face of home, im a bee free from the swarm, alone in the storm
(bree) You are stranded here, all hope abandoned here, the valley floor is near
the sun forgot to climb, there is darkness inside mine, the mist still in the brine
Where land is never dry, theres salt inside your eyes, with despair you fought the fire
No treetops shelter you, white-faced you split in two, to die a death thats new
